01Overview

Glassy is an electric piano module inspired by digital electric piano sounds from the late 1980s and 1990s. Sampleson recreated these timbres using spectral modelling rather than FM synthesis or samples, and the developer also introduces new sounds alongside the classic-style ones. The instrument is compact, at roughly 35MB installed, and needs no library download or third-party player to run.

Spectral Modelling Sound Design

Glassy is built on spectral modelling, an approach the developer describes as related to additive synthesis. Sampleson uses spectral models to recreate well-known digital piano sounds and to create new ones.

The spectral models give detailed control over the harmonics across the keyboard range, so the tone can change in a precise way from low to high notes. The instrument includes 20 factory electric piano sounds to start from.

Pads, Effects and Workflow

Beyond the electric piano module, Glassy includes a pad generator with a filter for building sustained textures. Chorus and phaser effects are included for shaping the sound directly in the plugin.

The plugin loads into major DAWs, including Cubase, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Cakewalk, Reaper, Bitwig, Nuendo and FL Studio, and it does not require online activation.

Questions, answered

What formats does Glassy support?

Glassy is available in VST3, VST2, AU and standalone formats. It runs on Windows (64-bit) and macOS, including Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

What do I need to use Glassy?

On Windows, you need Windows 7 or later, and on macOS, macOS 10.7 or later. You also need a VSTi or AU plugin host, which is a DAW or other compatible host, and 4 GB of RAM. Pro Tools is not supported.

Does Glassy need a library or a third-party player?

No. The developer states that Glassy needs no extra purchases, no library installation and no third-party player such as Kontakt or UVI.

How do the sounds in Glassy differ from sample-based pianos?

Sampleson says Glassy uses spectral modelling instead of FM synthesis or samples. The sounds are generated from spectral models with detailed control of the harmonics.
