01Overview

ElectroNylon is the first instrument in Sampleson's Luthier Series, a line of experimental virtual instruments. Its core idea is a single control that moves the sound from nylon guitar toward electric piano while the instrument plays. The developer says the sound includes finger noises, slides and other details from a nylon guitar, combined with the vintage character of reed and tine electric pianos. Sampleson describes the series as a place to build playable instruments from unusual combinations of sounds.

How the Nylon-to-Piano Morph Works

ElectroNylon is built on spectral modeling, a technique that analyzes real instruments and reproduces their harmonic and formant content. Sampleson's models cover a nylon guitar and two electric pianos, one with reeds and one with tines.

The transformation blends the harmonics and formants of these models mathematically. Sampleson says the process runs in real time without a noticeable increase in CPU usage, so the sound can be shifted while you play rather than set in advance.

Format, Installation and Host Requirements

ElectroNylon is distributed as VST2 and AU plugins, with 64-bit support and Windows and Mac VST, AU and Standalone versions included. The installer is about 35 MB, and the developer states that no third-party player is required.

It needs a VST or AU host, roughly 70 MB of disk space and 4 GB of RAM on either system. Pro Tools is not supported. Activation is not required online.
