01Overview

Flow & Motion - Dombra is built around a rhythm engine rather than pre-recorded chords or loops. The developer says it is designed to add movement and nylon percussion to a track, and that it can sit in the background to hold rhythm together. A rhythm mode handles pattern generation, while a fully playable mode is available for single-note and melodic work. The instrument is based on samples of real performances and is licensed for the free Kontakt Player as well as the full version of Kontakt.

Rhythm engine and playable modes

The default engine chooses the string and fret for you, so you can trigger rhythms by pressing a few keys without learning how the engine works. Wavelet Audio describes the engine as machine learning based and trained on thousands of rhythms.

For classical-style melodies, you can turn the rhythm engine off and switch to fully playable mode. Normal mode plays like a real two-string instrument, Solo mode suits lead lines, and Polyphonic mode is intended for chords and harmonies.

Sampling, articulations and sound

The library uses 16 round robins in both directions, four dynamic layers and four articulations, with legato slides included. Recordings were made with two close and two room microphones, and a doubletrack option is available.

The developer notes that the dombra was sampled on two strings, and that the engine can also reproduce the tone of instruments such as koto, mandolin, bass, guitars and synths. Subtle natural noise was kept on purpose to preserve a performed feel. Velocity can be used to choose a specific string when you want more control over tone.
