01Overview

Softube built FET Compressor MK II as a ground-up remake of a hardware FET compressor that has been used on many recordings. The plugin keeps the original's fast gain reduction and character, including its aggressive, colored sound, and adds features for DAW-based work. Drive controls, dry/wet mixing, a sidechain section and a high-frequency make-up option give producers more control over how the compressor is used in a mix or on a master.

Sound and Character of the FET Compressor

Softube models the FET gain reduction stage, Class A solid-state amplifiers, and input and output transformers of the original hardware. The developer describes the original as the fastest compressor in the world, with a 20-microsecond attack time.

The FET and transformer drives can be used together or separately. This makes it possible to move between clean, controlled compression and more aggressive, distorted tones.

Workflow Controls for Mixing and Mastering

Dry/Wet mixing and a Sidechain section add control beyond the hardware original. Stereo Link lets you switch between linked mode, where left and right gain reduction move together, and Unlinked Dual Mono mode, where each channel is compressed independently.

The High Frequency Make-up feature offsets the loss of high frequencies that can occur during compression. The developer positions the plugin for sources such as vocals, snares, kick drums and guitars. The All-buttons-in mode, also called British mode, is modeled on the original hardware.
