01Overview

Evertone Expander v2 Upgrade from v1 is the second generation of the Evertone Project expander. It keeps the physics-based dynamics processing of v1 while the internal DSP has been rebuilt. The new HiDEF mode unlocks X8 oversampling and higher-precision gain-curve calculation. The plugin is aimed at mixing, mastering, recording and live use, and runs in AU, VST3 and AAX formats on Windows and macOS.

HiDEF Mode and Oversampling in Evertone Expander v2

The main change from v1 is a full refactor of the internal DSP, plus a switchable HiDEF precision mode. HiDEF ON enables X8 oversampling and more precise gain-curve calculation. HiDEF OFF gives behavior matching v1 with a lighter CPU load.

Oversampling is set to X4 or X8. X4 works in either HiDEF state, while X8 is only selectable when HiDEF is on. The developer states that oversampling reduces the digital-style grain that can appear when the expander is driven hard. The plugin reports a small latency figure to the DAW for phase-aligned processing. HiDEF can only be switched while playback is stopped.

Physics Modes and Expansion Controls

The expander is built on the equation of motion F=ma, with the signal treated as mass. Four physics modes are available: Standard, F=ma Light, F=ma Medium and F=ma Heavy, each with a different acceleration character.

Core controls include Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Hold, Knee and Range. The FORCE and DAMPING controls shape the physics computation. The developer recommends FORCE 1.00, DAMPING 1 and HOLD 0 for a purely physics-based response. AUTO functions analyze the source and propose starting parameter values.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

Who is this upgrade for?

This is an upgrade for existing owners of Evertone Expander v1. The full version is sold separately.

What formats and operating systems does it support?

It is available in AU, VST3 and AAX formats. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and macOS 10.13 or later, with a Universal Binary for Intel and Apple Silicon. AAX requires Pro Tools 12 or later.

What sample rates does it support?

The plugin supports sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz.

What is HiDEF mode?

HiDEF is a switchable precision mode. When on, it enables X8 oversampling and higher-precision gain-curve calculation. It defaults to ON on new inserts and switches OFF automatically when a V1 session is opened.
