Evertone Expander v2 effects plugin interface by Evertone Project

Evertone Expander v2: Physics-Based Upward Expander Plugin

Evertone Expander v2 is an upward expansion plugin from Evertone Project that uses a physics-based engine built on F=ma to lift transients above the threshold and extend dynamic range. It is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats.

01Overview

Evertone Expander v2 is the second generation of Evertone Project's dynamics processor. It keeps the physics-based approach of the first version while the internal DSP has been fully refactored. The developer positions it for mixing, mastering, recording and live use, where transient snap and attack are often lost during capture. Its HiDEF mode and oversampling options aim to keep the processed sound smooth and transparent.

Physics Engine and Transient Restoration

The plugin's core is an engine based on the equation of motion F=ma. Audio signals are treated as mass, and the acceleration component is applied to the conversion to electrical energy, which the developer describes as producing an expansion effect that feels natural and musical.

Evertone Project explains that microphone recording can partly attenuate or lose a signal's original transient acceleration. The expander is meant to restore that acceleration, which can help with flat sound images, peak-frequency build-ups and masking across sources such as kick, snare, bass, vocals and guitar.

HiDEF Mode, Oversampling and Controls

HiDEF mode is the main change from version 1. It enables X8 oversampling and higher-precision gain-curve calculation. X4 oversampling is available in either state, and X8 is selectable only when HiDEF is on. A new insert defaults to HiDEF on, while opening a version 1 session switches it off for backward compatibility. Switching is possible only while playback is stopped.

The main controls are Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Hold, Knee and Range. Four physics modes (Standard, F=ma Light, F=ma Medium and F=ma Heavy) change the character of the acceleration, and the F=ma section adds Force and Damping controls. Auto functions, including Auto Threshold, can propose starting values to shorten initial setup.

06FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Evertone Expander v2 support?

It is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats. AAX support is listed for Pro Tools 12 or later.

Which operating systems are supported?

It runs on macOS 10.13 or later, as a Universal Binary for Intel and Apple Silicon, and on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11.

What do I need to use Evertone Expander v2?

It requires a compatible host that supports VST3, AU or AAX, along with a V2-only serial license. The developer notes Apple notarisation and PACE signing.

What is the difference between HiDEF on and off?

HiDEF on enables X8 oversampling and higher-precision gain-curve calculation. HiDEF off matches the version 1 behavior with a lighter CPU load.
