01Overview

Dystropia is a Kontakt instrument for composers who need gritty, unsettling textures. Heavyocity built its library from analog synths, organic sources, field recordings and experimental processing, then organized it into rhythmic pedals, alarms, sustains, transitions and atmospheric noises. The developer describes it as a scoring tool for post-apocalyptic and dystopian scenes. It runs on Kontakt and is available as a plugin in several formats on Windows and macOS.

Sound Sources and Scoring Content

Dystropia contains more than 390 sound sources. The library groups them by musical role. There are 72 multisampled, tempo-synced rhythmic elements, 24 tonal pedals, 24 signature alarms and 24 glitch and atonal pedals. For sustained material, there are 108 multisampled sustains, 36 tonal and 36 atonal sustains, 24 noises and textures, and 12 soundscapes.

For transitions, the library includes 216 signature events, 72 tonal and atonal stings, 72 swells, dives and risers, and 72 tonal and atonal reverses. These cover the cues a film or game score typically needs, from tension builds to sudden hits and reversed impacts.

Dystropia Designer and Dystropia Menu

The Dystropia Designer is the layering engine. Its browser loads sources across three banks, and a macro knob controls multiple parameters and sequencing at once. Each channel has FX controls for envelope, tone, drive, motion and space. The advanced mixer adds drift, scatter and recordable automation, and performance controls handle tempo sync, start times and sequencing. A custom master FX section includes punish, compression, reverb and delay.

The Dystropia Menu maps 36 keys to individual sounds, which makes it useful for auditioning a wide range of tonal and atonal material quickly. An Expand Source function assigns one sound across the whole keyboard. Each source has its own filter, EQ, volume, pan and tuning.
