01Overview

Duduk is a sample-based instrument for Kontakt that captures the sound of the Armenian double-reed woodwind. Loot Audio describes the sound as meditative and haunting, with a tone similar to an oboe or saxophone. The library is recorded at 192kHz, 32-bit and runs to about 2.82GB. It covers the main articulations of the instrument and extends them across expanded chromatic ranges, so it can work for melodic lines, drones and textural sound design.

Sound, Articulations and Recording Approach

The instrument's core is a broad set of articulations, including sustain, sustained vibrato, full and half trills, three crescendo types, flutter, ornaments, phrases, falls and risers, staccato and percussion. Several alternative deep reed and lip-in articulations add further options for expressive playing.

Loot Audio notes that the instrument was recorded and then explored further through its snapshots. Individual articulations are marked with the keyboard note where they start, such as C2 or C4. Most natural articulations begin two octaves above the lowest note, C2 in Kontakt, while the alternative lip-in articulations are spread across the full 88-key layout.

The percussion loops are tempo-synced with Time Machine and are natively programmed at 100 BPM.

Snapshots, Drones and Use Cases

The instrument ships with 82 snapshots. Natural has 24 presets for the Duduk's articulations, Drones has 17 tonal presets for accompaniment and scoring, Sound Design has 36 presets that add colour and character, and Rhythms has 4 scoring presets. A clean snapshot is included as a starting point for new sound design.

The library also includes 26 drones. Notes from a cello, violin, shakuhachi, bamboo flute, accordion, harmonica, two hulusis, bawu, tongue drums and handpan were recorded for this project, and other drones are synthesized or hybrid sounds. These suit composers who want a meditative, ethnic-leaning texture behind a melody.
