01Overview

Chromatix is based on a Chroma synthesizer, the 16-VCO analog instrument that CBS released in 1981. The developer describes a restoration process that brought an original unit back to working order before its sounds were captured. The result is delivered as a Kontakt instrument with 1030 24-bit samples and 75 example instruments. It is aimed at producers who want the character of a vintage 16-oscillator synth inside a sampler workflow.

Layering Engine and Partial Selection

The core of Chromatix is its four-channel layering engine. Each of the four voice panels shows an LCD display of the selected voice. Clicking a display opens a pull-down menu where one of 56 partials can be chosen.

The partials are split into two banks of 28. Channels 1 and 3 draw from the first bank, and channels 2 and 4 draw from the second. This gives a large number of possible layered combinations from a single instrument.

Loot Audio notes that each layer has its own fine and coarse tuning, ADSR envelope, panning, velocity sensitivity, LFO and tone controls. The bundled example instruments are a practical reference for how the layers can be combined.

Who Chromatix Is For

Chromatix suits producers who want layered pads, evolving textures and complex tonal blends built from a single instrument. The included example instruments give a starting point before you build your own layers.

Because it runs inside Kontakt, it fits into an existing sampler-based template rather than requiring a separate host.
