01Overview

Babylon 1 is built around a single interface page where all the major synthesis parameters sit together. The developer designed it as an alternative to synths that spread programming across multiple windows and menus. Its oscillators support multi-voice and stereo unison with detuning, and it includes filters, a set of effects and an internal modulation matrix. Presets are sorted into themes in the onboard browser, and the plugin can be used for leads, basses, pads, organs, keys and FX.

Sound Design and Waveform Options

Babylon 1 includes 257 high-resolution waveforms. Along with variants of the classic oscillator shapes, the developer includes formant, gritty, voice and instrument waveforms. Each waveform can be inverted, reversed, or both.

The filter section adds five poly effects, named drive, distortion, saturation, crush and LoFi. A dedicated Vibrato LFO offers delay and attack settings for smooth vibrato transitions. The ADSR and filter programming use 12 curve types, and visual unison feedback shows the width and depth of your detuning settings.

FM, RM and AM modulation are included alongside the modulation matrix, giving you several ways to shape timbre beyond basic subtractive synthesis.

Microtonal Tuning and Scale Helper

Babylon 1 lets you tune each individual note to its own frequency, so you can play quarter-tone and microtonal scales that standard tuning cannot reproduce. The developer notes that this is unusual for a soft synth.

The plugin includes 23 standard scales and 34 traditional scales and modes from the Middle East. You select a scale and key, and the notes of the scale are highlighted on the virtual keyboard. Microtonal tuning is configured automatically when a scale is chosen.

These features suit experimental harmonics and music built on non-Western scales.
