The Head Group includes nine articulations for note attacks and ornaments, including Tonguing, Grace Up and Down, Arpeggio Up and Down, Mordent, Pre-Trill and Impulse. The Body Group adds thirteen articulations such as Sforzando, Espressivo, several Vibrato variations, Mid-Trill, Slide and Repeated-Note Legato. Body articulations can serve as ornaments or as transitions between notes.

Samples were recorded with five microphones, including front, mid, rear and a distant stereo pair, with three microphone modes for different tonal and spatial results. Most individual samples average about eight seconds, so many notes play without looping, and looping can be enabled for longer sustains.

Riffer 4 is built around the monophonic and legato behavior of wind instruments, which helps prevent unnatural polyphony in MIDI performances. Once a phrase is complete, Auto Expression and Auto Vibrato can generate curves in one click. The developer says the system skips curves for very short Tonguing or Sforzando notes, which already carry dynamic variation.

Articulation editing replaces much of the Keyswitch and MIDI CC programming, and multiple CC curves can be displayed together. Riffer 4 also includes Quantize, Swing, Legato and Monophonic tools, plus built-in 8-band EQ, Compressor, Delay and Convolution Reverb.
