01Overview

Aliasonix comes from Loot Audio, a developer that often revisits older computing hardware and software. Its sounds are based on 8-bit waveforms captured from an Amiga A1200, then played back through a new synth engine. The developer describes the result as similar in nature to early digital/analog hybrid instruments. The raw aliasing, stepping and noise in the source audio are intentional parts of the sound.

Best for

  • Retro lead sounds
  • Lo-fi chiptune textures
  • 8-bit synth leads
  • Gritty solo instruments
  • Retro game-style music
  • Aliased digital tones

Sound Character and Synth Engine

Aliasonix is built on waveforms captured from a low sample rate 8-bit source, so noise, glitches, stepping and aliasing are part of its character. Loot Audio programmed around 40 patches and captured 630 samples in 24-bit from the line outputs of an Amiga A1200.

The instrument is the first release from Hideaway Studio to use a new synth engine called Solo, developed by Stephen Howell at Hollow Sun with scripting work by Mario Krušelj. Solo is designed for lead and solo instruments with real-time modulation.

Background and Source Software

The sounds draw on Aegis Sonix, a program from around 1989 that implemented a four-voice subtractive soft synthesizer with a digitally modelled low-pass filter and real-time dynamics control on the Amiga 500. The developer notes that its hand-drawn oscillator waveforms, LFOs and an option to add 2nd and 3rd-order harmonics to any waveform are part of its design history.

The library suits producers who want lo-fi, retro digital textures rather than clean modern tones.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Aliasonix?

Aliasonix requires the full version of NI Kontakt 4.2.4 or later. It will not work with the free NI Kontakt Player.

What operating system does Aliasonix support?

Aliasonix is listed for Windows.

What kind of sound does Aliasonix produce?

Its sounds are based on 8-bit Amiga waveforms, so they carry deliberate aliasing, noise and stepping artifacts. The developer describes the character as gloriously aliased 8-bit audio.
