01Overview

The 542 Tape Emulator is a recreation of the 500 series module Rupert Neve Designs released in 2013. It combines a tape emulation section, a Silk section with a variable Texture control and a Blend control for setting the amount of saturation. The developer says the plugin models the hardware closely and adds true M/S processing and input/output metering. It is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS.

Tape Saturation and Silk Voicings

Harmonic saturation grows as more gain is applied, and a soft clipper engages at higher levels to tame peak transients. Two selectable 15 and 30 IPS modes change the character of the tape sound, and a pre/post-tape emulation blend control sets how much of the effect is mixed in.

Silk Red emphasizes transformer-modeled saturation in the high and high-mid frequencies, the range the developer associates with its vintage equipment. Silk Blue adds saturation to the lows and low-mids, which can add thickness and weight to a source. The Texture knob sets how rich and saturated the result is, and disengaging Silk gives a cleaner, hi-fi tape effect.

Using 542 Tape Emulator in a Mix

The plugin supports true M/S processing, which lets you treat the mid and side channels separately. Input and output metering help you set levels before and after the effect.

The Blend control and Texture knob make it possible to range from subtle glue to heavy vintage coloration on the same plugin. Because it includes a soft clipper, it can be used on sources with sharp transients where you want to control peaks while adding saturation.
