XILS 3 modular analog synth plugin interface by XILS Lab

XILS 3: Modular Analog-Style Synth by XILS Lab

XILS 3 is a modular analog-style synthesizer plugin from XILS Lab. It emulates the Synthi VCS 3 and the 256 sequencer, and it can also run as an effects processor.

01Overview

XILS 3 is built around a pin matrix, a routing approach borrowed from 1969-era EMS modular synths. Instead of physical patch cables, you connect modules by placing pins in a grid. The plugin pairs that matrix with oscillators, filters, envelopes and LFOs, plus a polyphonic sequencer and a joystick vector controller. Input modules such as the gate, transient, envelope follower and pitch tracker let you use it as an effect processor too.

Sound Character and Core Synthesis

The synthesis core includes six oscillators grouped in three pairs, with waveshaping on sine, saw, triangle and square waves, plus a noise oscillator with selectable color. The multimode analog filter offers 12, 18 and 24 dB low-pass modes. The developer says the 18 and 24 dB modes can self-oscillate and that the filter is modeled on the zero-delay behavior of real analog circuits.

The plugin also includes a polyphonic ring modulator, three trapezoidal envelope generators that can switch to ADSR, and two polyphonic LFOs, one of which can run at audio rate. Two output filters feed the stereo bus.

Pin Matrix Routing and Sequencing

XILS 3 provides five pin matrices, including a main 256+225 point grid for audio synthesis, a trigger matrix and a sequencer matrix. An extended matrix adds two more envelopes, a tempo-syncable LFO, a tempo-syncable sample and hold, and a voltage processor. The developer notes that hundreds of additional connections are possible per patch.

The polyphonic sequencer has three independent lines with slew rates and three recording modes: live, step and edit. Its lines can also act as modulation sources. A joystick vector controller can target up to 32+32 modulation destinations.

Who It Is For

XILS 3 suits producers who want to work deeply with modular-style patching and enjoy building sounds from routing rather than presets alone. The developer also includes a preset database with tagging, plus hundreds of presets made by sound designers, so you can start from a finished patch and reshape it.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does XILS 3 support?

XILS 3 is available in VST2, AU, AAX and RTAS formats. It runs as a 64-bit plugin on Windows and macOS.

What do I need to run XILS 3?

On Mac it requires OS X 10.5 or later. On Windows it supports XP, Vista, 7 and 8. RTAS needs Pro Tools 7.0 or later, and AAX runs natively in 32- and 64-bit.

Can XILS 3 be used as an effect?

Yes. The developer says XILS 3 can run as an instrument or an effect plug-in, with input modules such as the gate, transient, envelope follower and pitch tracker.
