01Overview

PolyKB III is a plugin synth from XILS Lab that aims to recreate the sound of the RSF PolyKobol 2 polyphonic synthesizer. Its main feature is a set of three morphing oscillators that move continuously between waveforms, so you can shape a sound from triangle to pulse through saw. The synth also includes two multimode filters that can self-oscillate, three looping ADSR envelopes and two LFOs. It runs as a plugin inside a host application, with up to 16 voices of polyphony.

Morphing Oscillators and Analog-Style Filters

PolyKB III uses three oscillators that can morph continuously between waveforms instead of switching between fixed shapes. The developer describes the oscillators as aliasing-free, and the waveform range runs from triangle through saw and pulse. Oscillators 2 and 3 can also run at LFO rates, and a noise oscillator is included.

The synth has two 4-pole multimode filters. Each can self-oscillate, and filter 1 can feed filter 2 in cascade. Each oscillator can be routed to filter 1, filter 2 or both, and you can morph between the two filters using the filter balance. Pre and post drive modules are included on each filter.

Per-Voice Modulation and Step Sequencing

Two per-voice modulators set PolyKB III apart. The Voice XY pad is a per-note modifier that lets you control up to two parameters for each new note with a 2D pad, and the Space XY pad places each note at its own position in a stereo field.

The polyphonic sequencer can be used as a 128-step, four-line modulation sequencer, with each line able to control up to four synthesis parameters through the user matrix. It can also write TranceGate patterns or slide patterns. The developer also lists a monophonic and polyphonic arpeggiator, six playing modes, and four vintage effects.
