01Overview

TVHS is an effects plugin from Thenatan Audio that emulates a VHS deck and the television it was connected to. Its tape transport effects, called Wobble, Saturate, Breathe, Noise and Dropout, are built from modeled hardware behavior. Wobble uses filtered noise instead of a looping LFO, so modulation does not repeat on a fixed cycle. The television side adds headswitch glitches and CRT flyback whine, with NTSC and PAL switching. Ten convolution impulse responses from real tape and video hardware add further character.

Best for

  • Lo-fi drum processing
  • VHS-style vocal effects
  • Dub and tape delay textures
  • Degraded synth pads
  • Retro film and video sound
  • Mix bus character

What you get

  • Eleven modeled tape and CRT effects, each with independent bypass
  • Wobble generates wow and flutter from filtered noise, not an LFO
  • Dropout uses a random process so events clump and leave gaps
  • Tone knob sweeps from wide hi-fi track to narrow linear track
  • Headswitch and Flyback effects with NTSC and PAL standard switching
  • Ten convolution impulse responses from real tape and video hardware
  • Sixty factory presets across six categories
  • Every control is fully automatable, including effect bypass states
  • Resizable interface with real-time twin level meters
  • Serial number activation rather than a dongle

Tape Transport and Bandwidth Character

The developer says the tape effects are modeled from how the hardware behaves rather than from a fixed vintage curve. Wobble generates wow, flutter and scrape from filtered noise, so a sustained pad does not settle into a repeating pattern. Dropouts follow a random process, so dips can cluster or leave gaps instead of landing on a grid.

The Tone control moves the whole path from a wide hi-fi track toward a narrow linear track. Bandwidth narrows, a low-mid head-bump resonance grows, azimuth error dips the presence region and the upper mids fall away together. Turning Tone up adds a thick, boxy weight alongside the loss of treble.

Saturate applies tape record-amp drive with matched pre-emphasis and de-emphasis. Breathe models the VHS Hi-Fi compander mistracking, so the noise floor swells after transients and then drops again.

Television Effects and Workflow

The Headswitch effect reproduces the field-rate glitch of a VHS drum switching between its two heads, and the two heads are modeled to sound slightly different. Flyback adds CRT line-transformer whine and mains hum, amplitude-modulated together. Both effects follow the NTSC or PAL standard for field rate, scan-line frequency and hum frequency.

The plugin includes 60 factory presets in six categories, from Clean Transfer to Dead Channel. Each preset stores all eleven effects, the impulse response, the video standard, the mix and the output trim, along with each effect's bypass state. Every control is automatable, and hovering a control shows an on-screen description. The interface is resizable.

Use the Mix control to blend the processed chain against the dry signal, and Width to reduce tape-track crosstalk, from a fully mono image at zero to the full image.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats and operating systems does TVHS support?

TVHS is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS, in 64-bit versions. The developer lists native Apple Silicon support on Mac.

What do I need to run TVHS?

On Windows, you need Windows 7, 8, 10 or later. On Mac, you need OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks or later. Both platforms require 4 GB of RAM and 2 GB of free space on the system drive.

Does TVHS work in Pro Tools?

No. The developer notes that TVHS works in most major DAWs, including FL Studio, Logic and Ableton Live, but not in Pro Tools, because it has no AAX version. A separate AAX version is listed in the formats above, so check the current build before buying if Pro Tools is your host.

Does TVHS have a trial?

No trial version is listed for TVHS.
