01Overview

Tonebank is a MIDI sequencer plugin that improvises inside rhythmic, harmonic loops rather than producing simple arpeggios or random output. Node Audio says it draws on organizational principles from traditional African music systems. It offers 16 built-in harmonic systems, a Loop mode for arpeggio-style patterns, and a Melody mode that generates phrases with natural phrasing and rests. Producers can also build custom harmonies and clave patterns, making it usable for composition as well as idea generation.

Harmony, Clave and Groove Control

Tonebank's harmonic systems include pentatonic, hexatonic, heptatonic and overtone-based sets, plus custom harmonies you build yourself. The Custom Harmony editor lets you enter chords and notes through an on-screen keyboard or MIDI, then save them for reuse.

The clave determines where harmonic changes occur. Built-in clave and swing patterns cover asymmetric metres and micro-timing variations, and the Custom Clave editor lets you define your own rhythmic frameworks. Alternative tunings, including EDO, just intonation and harmonic tunings with MPE support, are also available.

Editing Patterns and Working in Your DAW

Pitch Sliders give direct visual control over each note in a sequence, and each slider is fully automatable. Tie buttons let you overlap notes for slides, glides and portamento, which Node Audio highlights for monophonic 303-style basslines.

Tonebank syncs to your DAW with selectable tempo ratios, and the Tonic can be changed in real time via MIDI input. With multi-instance synchronisation, linked instances share key changes, and you can record the MIDI output to edit in your project. Generate and Freeze let you lock patterns you like or let them keep evolving.
