Tape Echo Character and Controls
TD-201 focuses on the sound of vintage tape delay. Its multi-head mode selector lets you switch between playback heads and dial in a room-style setup, and you can mix reverberation and delay in the same way as on the classic units it is modeled on.
The lower panel offers per-head fine tuning. You can adjust depth, volume and stereo position for each playback head, with nine parameters in total for detailed control over the echo. The tap and sync controls let the tape speed follow the rhythm of your mix, so the echo responds to the tempo you tap in.
For a more authentic feel, the mid panel provides controls for motor, flutter, headroom, dropouts and noise, all modeled on hardware tape machine behavior. Setting the echo to 0 ms with only head 1 active gives a lo-fi cassette-style effect built from those same controls.
