Kit Library, Samples and Sound Character

The core of the plugin is its collection of drum kits. The library contains 135 snares, 112 kicks, 58 toms, 11 hi-hats, 14 crashes, 6 rides, 4 splashes and 3 chinas, so you can build a kit from individual pieces or start from a complete preset.

The developer says the samples include analog-processed and raw recordings made to 2-inch tape. It also highlights a set of previously unreleased one-shot snare samples from Steven Slate. These can be mixed into existing kits to change the character of the snare, and the one-shots use a new smart-velocity triggering algorithm intended to blend them with the rest of the kit.

Workflow, MIDI Mapping and Customization

Steven Slate Drums 5 includes a MIDI learn and map section that can be used to assign drum triggers quickly, which is useful when working with an electronic drum kit or pad controller. The mapping section has been redesigned for on-the-fly edits.

The interface can be resized. Each instrument has dynamics, panning and ADSR controls, and you can route ambient room and close microphones with custom routing options. You can also import third-party samples and grooves and use them alongside the included material.
