01Overview

Soliste VLN 356 - Violin is part of Expressive E's Soliste range of solo string instruments. It uses physical modeling rather than samples, so bow behavior, vibrato and articulations respond to the player's gestures in real time. The developer positions the violin as the agile voice of the ensemble, suited to soaring melodies and intricate articulations. Soliste is designed to work especially well with the Osmose keybed, and it remains compatible with other MPE controllers and legacy MIDI gear.

Playing modes and bowing control

Soliste VLN 356 offers three playing modes. Classic Mode uses a press and tap concept: tap to trigger a bow stroke, and press to shape the dynamic intensity of sustained bowing.

Virtuoso Mode adds a back-and-forth bowing system for direct, real-time control over the bow. Expressive Bow Mode blends the two, so slow gestures sustain the bow while faster gestures engage back-and-forth motion.

The instrument also includes a set of articulation presets, from sul ponticello and pizzicato to Bartók pizzicato and staccato, plus a playable real-time tremolo.

Sound engine, vibrato and effects

Because the violin is physically modeled, you can change bow attack time, gesture shape and interaction type. You can also switch between bodies, each with its own tonal identity, and adjust note linking between detached and legato.

The smart vibrato system supports manual vibrato through per-note pitch control or a compatible playing interface, as well as an assisted vibrato that fades in on note-on or through continuous gestures.

On the output side, a standard 3-band EQ, a Brightness control for spectral presence, and a convolution reverb with captured real-world acoustics help the part sit in a mix.
