01Overview

Soliste DBS 1130 is part of the Soliste range of solo string instruments from Expressive E. It focuses on expressive, real-time playing rather than static sample playback. Its physical modeling engine responds to the player's gestures, so sustain, bow strokes and tremolo flow directly from touch. The developer describes the instrument as the foundation of the string section, with deep lows and subtle articulations. It is built to work with the Osmose keybed and other MPE controllers, as well as Touché and traditional MIDI controllers.

Playing Modes, Bowing and Vibrato

Soliste DBS 1130 offers three playing modes. Classic Mode uses a press and tap approach: a tap triggers a bow stroke, and pressing shapes the dynamic intensity of sustained bowing. Virtuoso Mode adds a back-and-forth bowing system for direct, real-time control over the bow. Expressive Bow Mode combines both: taps trigger single bow strokes, while slow presses sustain the bow and faster gestures engage back-and-forth motion.

Vibrato can be played manually with per-note pitch control or any compatible playing interface, or handled by an assisted system where natural vibrato fades in on note-on or through continuous gestures. The system transitions smoothly between manual and assisted vibrato.

Sound Engine, Bodies and Effects

Because the instrument is built on physical modeling, the developer exposes bow behavior, from attack time and gesture shape to interaction types such as sustain, back-and-forth, hybrid modes and tremolo. Different bodies give the instrument distinct tonal identities. Note linking can be set to detached or legato, and a large set of timbral parameters allows further shaping.

The effects section includes a standard 3-band EQ, a Brightness control for spectral presence in a mix, and a convolution reverb using captured real-world acoustics, from churches and grand halls to smaller rooms. Articulation presets cover sul ponticello, pizzicato, Bartók pizzicato, staccato and a playable real-time tremolo.

Questions, answered

What formats and operating systems does Soliste DBS 1130 support?

It is available in VST3, VST2 and AU formats. The developer lists support for Windows and macOS.

What do I need to run Soliste DBS 1130?

The listed requirements include macOS 12 (Monterey) to 15 (Sequoia) or Windows 11 and higher, an Intel Core i5-7400 or Ryzen 5 2600 CPU as a minimum, and 4 GB of RAM. Authorization uses PACE iLok with no hardware dongle required, for up to 3 activations.

Does Soliste DBS 1130 work with MPE controllers?

Yes. It is designed for Expressive E's Osmose keybed and is compatible with all other MPE controllers. It also works with Touché and traditional MIDI controllers.

Can I play vibrato and portamento without MPE?

Vibrato can be performed with per-note pitch control or assisted with an automatic fade-in system. Portamento uses a velocity-based system with adjustable options, so it is not limited to MPE-specific gestures.
