01Overview

The SD-PE1 is an EQ plugin from Slate Digital that reproduces the behavior of a passive equalizer. Passive EQs differ from the EQs many producers use every day, and the developer describes this one as an unusual design. Beyond the core emulation, the plugin adds frequencies that were not available on the original hardware and offers a switch for the tube-stage coloration. It is part of the Virtual Mix Rack ecosystem and is suited to drums, bass, vocals and mix bus processing.

Passive EQ Character and Tube-Stage Control

Passive equalizers attenuate the signal rather than boosting it, so the output is normally quieter than the input. The original hardware compensated with a tube amplifier stage after the EQ. Slate Digital's SD-PE1 lets you switch that tube stage on or off. With it off, you can remove the saturation and color from the processed signal without a drop in output level. With it on, you get the traditional coloration of the hardware.

The switch makes it practical to decide per track whether you want the color of the tube stage or a cleaner passive curve.

Frequency Selection and Workflow

On the hardware, frequency choices were limited to the points printed on the front panel. The SD-PE1 adds extra frequencies to each band and offers both stepped and incremental frequency selection. The developer describes this as a flexible setup for detailed tweaking.

The extra frequency points give more room for precise, deeper processing on sources such as drums, bass, vocals and the mix bus.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does SD-PE1 support?

SD-PE1 is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats.

Which operating systems does SD-PE1 run on?

SD-PE1 runs on Windows and macOS. Windows requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, and macOS requires macOS 13 or later.

What do I need to use SD-PE1?

You need a free iLok license manager account to run Slate Digital software. The minimum system requirements are 4GB RAM and an Intel or Apple Silicon processor on macOS, or an Intel or AMD processor on Windows.

What does the tube-stage switch do?

The switch turns the tube amplifier stage on or off. Turning it off removes the saturation and color without a drop in output level, which is useful because passive EQs are normally quieter than their input.
