01Overview

Sonuscore's first phrase library focused on plucked instruments takes its cues from the lute and theorbo of the late medieval and Renaissance periods. The library is built from live-recorded phrases, including plucks, tremolos and trills, set in the darker tones of Natural Minor and Dorian. It is a companion to the Lyrical and Ethnic Phrases series, moving the same approach toward a more medieval sound. The phrases are meant to drive rhythm and movement, which lets them sit in a wider range of projects than purely lyrical material.

Live-recorded lute and theorbo phrases

The library contains 10 lute and 5 theorbo themes. The phrases focus on rhythm, with plucks recorded with 3 round robins, tremolos and a range of trills, most recorded with 2 round robins.

Because the phrases are built around movement rather than melody alone, they can suit projects beyond period pieces. The developer points to experimental music and ambient work as possible uses.

Playing the lute and theorbo

Besides the phrases, the lute and theorbo can be played freely as individual instruments. This allows you to connect phrases or write your own melodies alongside them.

The lute is playable in arpeggios and chords, and the phrases sync to your DAW's tempo. The FX page provides a 4-band EQ, delay and reverb for shaping the sound directly inside the instrument.
