01Overview

Liminal splits audio into three transient lanes based on intensity, letting producers apply effects to specific hits, notes or phrases instead of the whole signal. Each lane has its own input and output EQ and can be routed through any combination of three effect slots in series or parallel. The effect set covers bitcrush, delay, flanger, grain, overdrive, pitch, reverb, repeater and waveshaper, along with sidechain compression and a latching Performance Mode. It ships with a range of presets and a randomize function for exploring unusual results.

Transient Targeting and Lane Routing

Liminal detects transient amplitude using percussive, sustain or adaptive modes, and you can refine the detection with lookahead and sensitivity controls. Each of the three lanes can be routed through zero, one, two or all three FX slots, with the effects running in parallel or in series.

Each lane can be muted, soloed and level adjusted, and the plugin includes input and output level and mix controls. Input EQ can narrow what a lane responds to, for example removing low frequencies from the sidechain so only snare hits at the same volume as kicks are processed.

Effects for Sound Design and Sample Processing

The nine-plus effects include grain and waveshaper for dramatic timbral change, and repeater and pitch with stereo detune for glitchy, pitch-unstable textures. The developer describes the waveshaper as capable of extreme distortion.

Liminal is aimed at drums, loops, melodic performances and vocals, with the aim of transforming sources into new sounds or rebalancing a mix. Its Mix control can be automated to create transitions.

What formats and operating systems does Liminal support?

Liminal is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS. Pro Tools (AAX) is not currently supported according to the system requirements.

What do I need to run Liminal?

macOS 10.15 or later for AU and VST3, or Windows 10 or later for VST3. The developer recommends 16GB RAM and an M1 or M2 Mac or an i7 or better processor. At least 250 MB of free disk space and an internet connection for the initial activation are required.
