Sound Source and Cultural Background
The Cué flute is the generic name for the flute in Boruca. Among the native flutes of this group, there are two types, identified by the thickness of the cane used, which determines the sound. One is made from a cane called Duyän. The other, Kibi, is crafted from carrizo, a type of reed, and has a beeswax mouthpiece inserted at one end.
The developer explains that this aerophone was played in the Baile de los Diablitos. Because of the intensity of the dance, the flute would often break, which contributed to its decline. It was eventually replaced by the modern plastic recorder. Kuivi preserves the sound of this instrument as a sample-based resource.
