Sound Source and Background
The calabash guiro is played by scraping a stick along its carved front surface. Traditionally it has served as an accompaniment in Latin rhythms. Sounds of the Earth notes that the instrument is now mostly found in northern Costa Rica, where calabashes are harder to obtain and a commercial metal version has become more common.
The recorded example was crafted and performed by Daniel Mora, so the samples reflect a traditional handmade instrument rather than a synthetic or processed guiro.
