01Overview

Planet 909 is built around the idea that the Roland 909 sounds different once it has been processed. Niche Audio recorded its drum hits through a range of hardware, including an SSL mixing console, compressors, EQs, tube amplifiers and filters, so each kit carries a distinct character. The collection also includes an untreated kit recorded through high-end converters for producers who want a clean starting point. The pack is designed for Maschine users and is fully tagged for building custom kits.

Processed 909 Sounds and Kit Character

Niche Audio says most 909 sample packs are unprocessed, while many well-known records use heavy EQ and compression on their 909 drums. Planet 909 follows that approach. Each drum hit was run through an assortment of hardware, and the kits range from lightly processed to heavily saturated.

The kits use different signal paths. One kit uses a Mackie mixer, which the developer describes as a budget mixer common among dance producers in the 1990s. Others use an SSL 900 AW console, a Summit Audio TLA-50 or TLA-100A tube amplifier, or a Moog filter section. Some kits are described as subtle, while others are labeled as driven or in your face.

Using the Kits in Maschine

Planet 909 is made for Maschine, and all samples are fully tagged. Maschine users can open the samples tag, select BeatMachines, and then choose a drum tag such as kick to show only the kick samples from this pack. This makes it quick to assemble custom 909 kits.

The developer notes that samples from different kits can be combined, for example blending a console-processed kick with a filtered one or pairing a clean snare with a heavily compressed one. All samples were recorded at 96 kHz, downsampled, left unlimited, and set to -4 dB to leave headroom for your own processing.
