01Overview

Cabinetron is built around the IR browser, editing tools and mixing options that let you work with a large cabinet collection without losing track of files. The developer says the loader's convolution is designed for sound quality, with a noise-shaping algorithm made specifically for IR convolution. An optional non-linear enhancement models how the voice coil moves within the magnet, and a built-in EQ and Tone Matching panel help you shape the result. It runs as a 64-bit VST2, VST3, AAX or Audio Unit plugin.

Sound Quality and Non-Linear Enhancement

Three-Body Technology says that IR loaders can sound different even when they use the same algorithm, and attributes much of that difference to rounding errors in convolution DSP code. Cabinetron uses double precision and a noise-shaping algorithm designed for IR convolution.

The developer notes that convolution models most of a speaker's behavior well because it is linear. Cabinetron adds an optional non-linear enhancement that models voice coil movement within the magnet. You can set the amount or leave it off, so you can use it as a transparent linear IR loader when you prefer that.

The Speaker Impedance Simulation EQ is a 3-band EQ based on a model of physical cabinet circuits, which can help correct low and high frequency shifts caused by different power amps.

Editing, Mixing and Virtual Microphone Controls

Cabinetron lets you smooth an IR's spectrum to reduce resonant peaks and phase irregularities, or reduce it to a rough outline of its frequency response. The 31 EQ curve Mutation knob turns one IR into 31 variations, and the FRED knob blends two simulated microphone signals positioned at a 45-degree angle.

The virtual microphone can be moved horizontally and vertically. Dimension Mixer lets you blend up to 8 cabinets by dragging within a 2D space. Auto Phase Alignment aligns IRs from different sources with one click.
