01Overview

ZENOLOGY PRO Collection puts Roland's ZEN-Core sound engine into a plug-in host. The engine is built from discrete synth voices with oscillators, filters, amplifiers, dual LFOs and effects, and it mixes vintage Roland oscillators and filters with PCM waves. Five Model Expansions add emulations of well-known Roland synths, and the collection is available in VST2, AU and AAX formats for Mac and Windows.

ZEN-Core sound engine and layering

Each ZEN-Core voice combines a flexible oscillator, filter, amplifier, dual LFOs and effects. According to Roland, the engine blends multiple synthesis types, pairing vintage Roland oscillators and filters with PCM waves that support sync and cross modulation.

Up to four voices can be layered in a single tone, which Roland positions for both classic and modern sounds. Tones and drum kits are available in the thousands and can be expanded to more than 10,000 selections.

Model Expansions and workflow

The five Model Expansions cover the JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, SH-101, JD-800 and JX-8P. Roland says the SH-101 expansion turns the monophonic original into a polyphonic synth, and the JX-8P expansion includes the hands-on editing functions of the PG-800 programmer.

Model Expansions can be swapped and sounds loaded instantly, and the interface is designed for touch-friendly controls and easy resizing. Some models offer increased polyphony over the original hardware, and the collection adds extended parameters, an advanced arpeggiator and onboard effects.
