Authentic JD-800 Sound and Multi-Effects

Roland describes the JD-800 software as built to sound and behave like the original hardware, using the original waveform data rather than a set of samples. The instrument uses D-50-style waveforms with multimode resonant filters, and each of its four layers works like a complete synthesizer with flexible modulation routing and time-variant amp and filter envelopes.

The two-stage multi-effects section is recreated with an expanded view for realtime tweaking. It offers seven effects: distortion/overdrive, enhancer, spectrum equalizer, phaser, chorus, triple-tap delay and a selection of reverbs. The effects can be reordered by drag and drop to change the signal flow.

Interface, Polyphony and Plugin Workflow

The interface is resizable for high-resolution screens and includes alternate views. The plugin offers expanded polyphony compared with the original hardware, and Roland says it runs multiple instances with lots of polyphony without excessive CPU use.

The plugin is available in VST3, AAX and AU formats, with native support for Apple silicon on modern Macs. It runs on Windows 10 or 11 and on macOS 11 or later. An internet connection is required to install and activate the Roland Cloud software.
