01Overview

Roland's SYSTEM-100 plugin models the semi-modular monosynth released in 1975, which paired a Model 101 Synthesizer with a Model 102 Expander. The original combined two oscillators, two LFOs, sample and hold, ring modulation and a noise generator with patchable routing. This software version keeps that architecture and adds a combined interface, a visible patch matrix, a tempo-synced arpeggiator and onboard reverb, delay and phaser effects.

Sound Design and Modular Routing in the SYSTEM-100 Synth

The plugin uses two VCOs, two LFOs, sample and hold, ring modulation and a noise generator, all working together. Roland describes the sound as capable of fat basses, sync leads, dense textures and exotic soundscapes.

The 14x15 routing matrix lets you patch connections quickly, and each connection appears as a patch cable on screen. You can switch patching on or off to see the full signal flow, or leave it on to keep patching visible while you edit.

Workflow, Effects and Hardware Integration

The Model 101 and Model 102 sections sit in one interface, so the VCOs, LFOs, S&H and Ring Mod can be used across both units without manual patching between them.

A tempo-syncing arpeggiator and onboard reverb, tempo-synced delay and phaser are included. The plugin also supports PLUG-OUT with Roland SYSTEM-8 and SYSTEM-1m hardware. Roland says the SYSTEM-8 provides one-to-one, pre-mapped controls for hands-on operation.
