01Overview

Rebec is a sample-based instrument from Have Audio that captures the sound of a bowed rebec, the stringed instrument played by minstrels at medieval and early Renaissance feasts. The samples were taken from a Spanish rebec, known as a rabel, built in a remote village in the Cantabria mountains. The library runs inside Kontakt and covers an instrument range from F2 to A3, with a set of articulations for sustained, short and plucked playing.

Sound and Articulations of the Rebec Samples

The library offers fifteen articulations, including long vibrato, intimate long vibrato, strong vibrato and sustain without vibrato. Short-note options include staccato, stabs and three mordente variations. For plucked and percussive colors, the set includes organic pizzicato, raw pizzicato, body percussions and tremolo.

The instrument also includes special effects and ominous textures for atmospheric parts. Have Audio says the rebec was sampled as a raw, primal instrument with a body of unfinished wood and lamb skin head, and the samples keep that rough character.

Using Rebec in Kontakt Projects

Rebec is delivered as a single NKI file containing 375 samples in .ncw format, totaling over 295MB uncompressed. The instrument is built for Kontakt and will not run in the free Kontakt Player. Producers working with medieval, folk or cinematic material can use the articulation set to build melodic lines, ornamented phrases and rhythmic accents from one instrument.

The Caffè Antico engine, which Have Audio describes as expanding the instrument's playability, is the basis of the performance layer.
