01Overview

Modus is a synth instrument from Physical Audio built on physical modeling. Rather than shaping oscillators, it simulates acoustic elements such as strings, plates, springs and rattles and lets them interact. The developer describes the engine as based on its collision modeling research. Modus offers three instrument types, each combining these elements in a different way, along with LFOs, a multi-effects section, MPE support and MTS-ESP micro tuning.

Sound Character and Instrument Types

Modus offers three instrument modes. Connected Strings gives each voice up to four strings that can be plucked or used as resonators, linked by rattles or nonlinear springs. Strings Connected to a Plate uses two strings on a plate, retuned in real time to cover six octaves in monophonic or duophonic playback. Driven Plates uses one plate excited by a driver signal and connected to a second plate, with a driver that can be a polyphonic sawtooth or sine wave, a multi-strike hit for percussive sounds, or sidechained audio.

Across the modes, decay, mass and harmonic content are adjustable parameters, so the same structure can produce very different tones.

Controls, Modulation and Workflow

The physical parameters, including decay, mass and connection behavior, can be changed in real time. Two LFOs can modulate these parameters during playback. The multi-FX section includes EQ, VCF, Drive, Delay and Reverb. MPE support and MTS-ESP micro tuning extend the instrument to expressive controllers and alternative tuning systems. The interface is fully resizable.
