01Overview

Minimoog is a software instrument from Universal Audio, developed in partnership with Moog Music. It models the Minimoog Model D, a synthesizer introduced in 1970 that many producers still treat as the reference for fat, expressive analog bass and lead sounds. Universal Audio says its engineers modeled each module of the instrument and captured the interactions between them. The plugin runs inside a DAW, and it adds several custom modifications that were popular with users of the hardware.

Sound and Circuit Modeling

Universal Audio describes Minimoog as a circuit-modeled emulation. According to the developer, the team measured three vintage Minimoogs and selected one unit as the reference, then modeled each module and the coupling between them. The developer says this includes the Moog ladder filters and oscillators, the pitch tracking anomalies of the original, and the feedback effect created by routing the output back to the input.

The result is meant to reproduce the midrange punch, high-end presence and low end of the hardware. Universal Audio also highlights near-zero latency, which matters when you play the instrument live and record in real time.

Custom Mods and Workflow

Minimoog includes modifications that original Minimoog owners often added to their units. These include switchable note priority, legato, sample and hold, and an extra LFO. The additions expand the range of sounds available beyond the stock Model D.

Because the plugin is built for real-time playing, it suits hands-on programming. Its controls follow the layout of the hardware, so the workflow will feel familiar to anyone who has used a Minimoog.
