Universal Audio released the API Vision Channel Strip in 2013 to capture the sound of API's flagship analog console. The developer says API desks have been used on many well-known albums for more than 50 years. The plugin brings the console's preamp, EQ, compressor and gate into a single channel strip. It can be used on individual sources or on a full mix. Version 2 adds switchable EQ modules, a modeled output section and Unison support for Apollo interfaces.
The core of the plugin is an emulation of API's analog console channel. The 212L preamp is modeled with the 2520 op-amp and custom API transformers, which the developer says adds punch to signals.
The EQ section offers a choice between the 550L 4-band parametric EQ and the 560L series 10-band graphic EQ. The 560L emulation models the band interactions and filter amp distortion of the hardware, which is useful for shaping guitars, drums and vocals.
The 225L compressor has selectable "New" and "Old" modes, giving two different compression characters from mild to severe. It works on single tracks as well as complete mixes.
The 235L Gate/Expander is fast enough to shape attack and ambience on sources such as kick drums and bass synths, and it can clamp down on drum rattles and amp noise. The passive 215L Hi and Lo pass filters are fully sweepable for broad tonal shaping.
With an Apollo interface, Unison technology gives bi-directional control between the software and the interface's mic preamps, including the mic/line switch, dedicated cut filter and -6 dB line pad.
