01Overview

The JX-3P was one of Roland's first MIDI synthesizers, known for its button-based panel, preset recall and digitally controlled oscillators. Roland's software version models the original's analog circuit behavior using its proprietary ACB process. It adds a virtual PG-200 programmer for hands-on editing, a Circuit Mod function for tweaking the sound's character, and an integrated browser for finding patches across all installed banks.

Sound and Circuit Modeling

Roland says the plugin is built from analysis of original hardware units, circuit diagrams and historical data. The goal is to reproduce the instrument's analog behavior, including its characteristic quirks and instabilities.

The Circuit Mod function lets you sweep multiple internal trim adjustments with a single macro control. A Condition parameter simulates the effects of aging, so you can move from a factory-fresh sound to a more worn-in character.

Workflow, Controls and Effects

An integrated virtual PG-200 programmer gives access to more direct, hands-on controls than the original panel. The interface is high-definition and freely resizable.

The plugin adds velocity sensitivity, an extended oscillator range, an advanced arpeggiator and onboard effects. The original JX-3P chorus is included alongside reverb, flanger, delay and overdrive. LFO, arpeggiator and effects sync to tempo, and polyphony is adjustable from two to eight notes.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats and operating systems does JX-3P support?

JX-3P is available in VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, and on macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. It has native support for Apple silicon.

What do I need to use JX-3P?

You need a compatible DAW or plugin host that supports VST, AU or AAX. An internet connection is required to install and activate the Roland Cloud software.

Can JX-3P work with the SYSTEM-8 hardware?

Yes. The plugin can change its panel to match the SYSTEM-8, and its PLUG-OUT function turns the SYSTEM-8 into a standalone JX-3P with PG-200.
