01Overview

Hollywood Fantasy Percussion is a collection of struck and shaken instruments from EastWest Sounds, designed for epic and fantasy film and game scores. It covers low-end drums, folk percussion, metals and shakers in one suite. The developer says it is well suited to most orchestral scores and works best alongside the rest of the Hollywood Fantasy palette. It is aimed at composers who need percussion that fits a fantastical setting rather than a conventional orchestral or rock kit.

Drums and Folk Percussion for Fantasy Scores

The library includes three bodhrans, the Celtic frame drum played with a two-sided mallet or by hand, which gives a gentle but firm pulse. Three large taikos provide a deep, bassy rumble, and a separate Nagado ensemble offers a single, slow low impact suited to ceremonial passages. Nagara and ashiko folk drums add rolls, hits and rim taps for festival and street-performance textures.

A gran cassa adds a bass drum to extend the low end of an orchestra, struck across a wider range of impacts than conventional mallet playing.

Metals, Shakers and Orchestral Colour

The metal section covers Balinese ceng ceng cymbals, which are softer than Western cymbals, and North African krakeb castanets with a rounder, lower tone. Crotales, small chromatic cymbals, can sustain a gradual melody, while orchestral chimes and large struck metals cover church-bell and forge-style sounds.

Shakers include a goatnail shaker, a dry and brittle rattle for eerie rituals, and a metal shaker with a soft, dispersed sound for driving rhythm without cymbal splash. A nagara rub effect provides a bowed, howling texture.
