01Overview

Bolt is a synth plugin built around a Harmonics Synthesis engine. Instead of routing oscillators through a filter, you shape the overtone structure in the oscillator itself using the HARMONICS and ROLLOFF controls. The developer describes the interface as built for quick experimentation. Bolt includes 500+ factory and artist patches, 60 Boltronica sounds, and a trial version so you can test it in your own DAW.

Harmonics Synthesis Sound and Character

Bolt's oscillators run on Harmonics Synthesis. Turning the HARMONICS and ROLLOFF knobs moves a waveform from a subtle sine toward a brighter pulse chain. The ODD switch restricts the oscillator to odd harmonics only, and adding DEEP pushes the waveforms toward saw or square shapes when ODD is active.

Each of the four oscillators (two main, two sub) has its own ADSR envelope and overdrive stage, and each includes a white noise generator. Unison Voice Double can stack up to four instances, and the synth offers both frequency modulation and X-Mod cross-modulation.

Modulation and Effects Workflow

Bolt has one modulation envelope generator and three LFOs with 13 waveforms, including random and stepped shapes. LFOs can run free or sync to MIDI, and the developer notes their range extends from 0.01 Hz to 10 kHz, which allows audio-rate modulation. Each of the four modulation sources has four targets, and the targets are pre-assigned, so you raise an amount to hear the effect.

The four built-in effects are EQ, Chorus, Delay and Reverb, with three parameters per processor. Delay includes tempo sync, and the EQ offers parametric and bandpass modes.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does Bolt support?

Bolt is available as VST3, VST2 and AU instrument plugins. It runs on Windows and macOS, and the developer lists 64-bit support on both.

What do I need to run Bolt?

Bolt needs Windows 7, 8, 10 or higher (64-bit), or macOS 10.9 or higher (64-bit), with M1 Macs supported. Other requirements depend on your DAW and audio interface.

Does Bolt use a filter?

No. Bolt generates the overtone structure within the oscillator, so it has no separate filter section like a typical subtractive synth.

Is there a trial version?

Yes, Bolt offers a trial version so you can test the synth in your own DAW before deciding.
