Tube Preamp Character and Compression Modes
The 610 preamp section uses the modern 610-B circuit, which Universal Audio says offers deeper EQ controls than the original design. Universal Audio describes its harmonics and overdrive as smooth and rich, and it is intended for vocals and instruments.
The 1176 mode uses the FET-based circuit associated with fast response to guitar, bass and drum transients. The LA-2A mode uses optical compression. Switching between the two modes gives you a fast or a smooth compression character within the same channel strip.
