01Overview

The VREV-63 models a spring reverb unit of the sixties, known for the drippy, splashy tails that defined surf guitar and later turned up in reggae, dub, garage and rockabilly. Fuse Audio Labs describes the plugin as a recreation of that tube-driven design. Its controls focus on how hard the springs are struck, how bright the tail sounds and how much of the classic tone-suck character is present. The plugin is also used on synths, vocals and strings.

Spring Reverb Sound and Character

The Dwell knob sets both reverb intensity and decay time by changing how hard the springs are hit by the input signal. A Tone control lets you dial back the treble to the level of brightness you want.

The tone suck effect, which reduces high frequencies, is part of the sound and can be switched. Fuse Audio Labs attributes it to an emulation of the original tone and mixer circuits, and it is central to the lush, vintage character of the tails.

Modifications and Workflow Options

According to Fuse Audio Labs, the plugin includes the popular modifications of the original hardware. A C10 capacitor mod gives a deeper, richer reverb, and tube rolling lets you switch between NOS 6K6 and the hotter 6V6 tubes.

You can also choose one of three spring tanks to change the sound. The developer notes that the reverb unit can be kicked for dramatic effects without damaging the hardware, a nod to the physical character of the original.
