01Overview

SYMPH EQ is the plugin version of Heritage Audio's SYMPH EQ 19-inch rack unit. The developer says it carries the rack unit's musicality into software and is built on the Baxandall EQ, a tone control design first created around seventy years ago. The plugin covers stereo mixes, Mid/Side processing and mono use, with adjustable high and low shelves and high-pass and low-pass filters. Its input and output transformer modeling is designed to add an analog character to digital mixes.

Analog Modeling and Equalizer Character

Heritage Audio says the plugin recreates custom Carnhill Oxford input transformers and custom Carnhill St Ives output transformers, both made for the company, along with a high-end, 73-style Class A output stage. The equalizing control has 0.5 dB steps for detailed adjustments.

The developer describes the sound as tight, sweet and natural, and says its gentle EQ curves and parallel equalization keep phase deviation low.

Mid/Side Processing and Filter Controls

In Mid/Side mode, the plugin can add bass weight to the center channel while boosting high frequencies on hard-panned sources. The side high-pass filter switches to an elliptical topology, which the developer says follows vintage disc cutter designs.

The equalizer section offers high-frequency shelves selectable at 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 24 kHz, and low-frequency shelves at 20, 60, 110, 220, 360 and 470 Hz. Both have a boost and cut range of ±10.5 dB. The high-pass filter offers 12 dB/octave slopes at 15, 20, 47, 82 and 160 Hz, and the low-pass filter offers 12 dB/octave slopes at 10, 12, 18, 22 and 30 kHz.
