Blackstar's developer notes describe the plugin as designed from real amplifier engineering rather than a modeled approximation. It includes a 6L6 amp with two voicings, a clean headroom setting, and a high-gain overdrive circuit. Paired with the CabRig speaker simulator and a noise gate, it covers the full path from amp to microphone.
The 6L6 amp is built around two channel voicings. Channel II Voice I uses a modern preamp gain stage with a British-style passive tone stack, giving a detailed, clear response. Channel II Voice II shifts the design toward tight, articulate modern metal sounds.
The amp also has clean headroom alongside Blackstar's highest-gain overdrive circuit, so the same plugin can cover clean, crunch and high-gain sounds.
CabRig is Blackstar's DSP speaker simulator. It models a speaker, cabinet, microphone and room together, rather than loading a fixed impulse response. Blackstar says it adds effectively zero latency and avoids phase mismatch.
For the St. James plugin, CabRig offers nine classic Blackstar speaker cabinets and six industry-standard microphones. A built-in noise gate is included for controlling noise at high gain.
