01Overview

LX480 Dual-Engine Reverb V4 is built around a recreation of the Lexicon 480L digital reverb from the mid-1980s and early 1990s. Its main difference from the original's single-engine approach is a dual-engine design, which lets two LX480 algorithms run at once in four routing configurations. The plugin also includes features not found on the hardware, including a 32-bit high-definition algorithm and stereo width controls, and it is aimed at mixing and production work that needs dense, wide reverb.

Reverb Algorithms and Dual-Engine Routing

The plugin includes recreations of the 480L reverb algorithms, among them Random Hall, Hall, Room, Plate, Ambiance, Twin Delays and Panorama. Two algorithms can run together in one of four engine configurations, which is the feature that sets it apart from single-engine reverbs.

Relab also states that the Random Hall HD algorithm uses 32-bit float processing to take advantage of modern computer power. The Twin Delays algorithm adds delay-based effects such as ping-pong delays and cross-fed echo patterns, so the unit can serve as a multi-effect processor as well as a reverb.

Workflow, Controls and Presets

The interface offers two modes. Hardware Mode follows the layout of the original remote control, while Advanced Mode adds an interactive screen and extra visual feedback. Quick controls and a resizable display are included for faster adjustment.

The filter section combines EQ with high-pass and low-pass filters, and a graphical display shows how they affect the signal. The plugin ships with a set of presets covering the original factory sounds and signature presets from mix engineers and sound designers.
