Sound and Character of the Gyratec-XIV EQ

The Gyratec-XIV is modeled on a hardware unit built around a parallel G14 filter design. Inductors and capacitors switch in and out of the circuit, and a tube-based makeup gain and output stage follows.

The variable Q behaves differently depending on the band direction. When a band is set to boost, the Q is relatively wide. When set to cut, the filter becomes narrower and more aggressive, approaching a notch at extreme settings. Antelope also says the circuit subtly widens the stereo image on stereo sources, and that on a mix bus it creates more space without adding audible artifacts or phase distortion.

Using the Gyratec-XIV for Mastering and Mixing

Because the boost and cut behavior of the Q setting differs, the Gyratec-XIV covers two jobs. Wide, gentle boosts suit broad tonal shaping, which is the usual role in mastering. Narrow cuts suit surgical correction of specific resonances or problem frequencies.

The plugin includes a native version that runs on Mac or PC without additional hardware. A Synergy Core Real-Time version is also available and runs with no perceptible latency on compatible Synergy Core devices.
