01Overview

The BAE-1023 is an EQ plugin from Antelope Audio that models a hardware rack unit built around the same hand-wired Carnhill transformers found in the BAE-1073. The developer positions it as a way to get more control over the mid and high frequencies while keeping the character of the original circuit. Its shelving and peaking bands make it usable on individual tracks as well as on full mixes, and its switchable high-pass filter adds further shaping options.

Sound and Character of the BAE-1023 EQ

The BAE-1023 is built on the analog circuitry of the BAE-1073, which Antelope Audio says it modeled while developing this unit. The developer describes the EQ as adding depth, punch and width, with smooth highs.

The mid band can be used in peaking mode, while the low and high bands act as shelves. Where the mid bell curve overlaps the shelving bands, the two can be used against each other, which gives you more room to shape a sound.

Antelope Audio says the unit is particularly useful for extra presence on distorted guitars and female vocals, and for adding air to overhead microphones.

Controls and Workflow for Mixing and Tracking

The low and high shelves offer +/-16dB of gain with selectable frequencies. The mid range provides +/-12dB or +/-18dB peaking with a switchable center frequency. A high-pass filter with an 18dB per octave slope can be set to 45Hz, 70Hz, 160Hz or 360Hz.

The controls cover both tracking and mixing use. The developer notes the EQ can be applied to individual instruments or to a whole mix bus.
