The VCL-515 uses a soft-knee compression curve, which the developer describes as creating a large but relaxed effect. This makes it suited to blending voices and instruments into a track without an obvious, clamped sound.

The original hardware is built around triode tubes and custom transformers. Fuse Audio Labs says this circuit gives the unit a warm tone of its own, and the plugin is modeled on that character. It can be used on individual tracks or as the main compressor on a mix or drum bus.

The tube saturation adds a creamy thickness that the developer positions as a way to glue tracks together, with a smooth transient response.

The original hardware has a single input gain control that sets the intensity of compression. The plugin keeps that control and adds variable attack, variable release, a sidechain filter, a mix stage and an output level control.

A mode switch lets you use the tube sound with or without compression applied, which is useful for checking the coloration on its own.

The extra controls make the plugin easier to fit into everyday sessions than the single-knob hardware.
